How do I choose an LED light for my planted aquarium?

2023-03-22

When shopping for high-quality LED lights for your planted aquarium, there are several factors to take into account. Two critical considerations are the Kelvin rating, which determines the light's color temperature, and the PAR measurements, which ensure that the light provides adequate lighting in terms of intensity.

Choosing the appropriate Kelvin rating will ensure that you purchase a light with white light that is suitable for aquarium plants. Meanwhile, the PAR measurements will ensure that the light delivers enough illumination in terms of quantity.

Kelvin rating – choosing the right type

The initial aspect to take into consideration is the color temperature of the product, which is determined by its Kelvin rating. Aquarium plants can adjust to a wide variety of color temperatures, but a product with a Kelvin rating of 5,500 to 7,500K is preferred. This range provides a simulation of a natural light source, similar to daylight, which is most suitable for optimal plant growth.

PAR – enough quantity (most common and easy to use)

Typically, a greater PAR value fosters plant growth, although various plant species necessitate different levels of PAR for proper growth. It is advisable to position the plants at different distances from the light source according to their specific PAR requirements.
