How to Choose the Right Light?

2023-06-07

When browsing our website for reef tank lights, you'll encounter over 200 different options, but fortunately, you can narrow down your choices quite easily. Firstly, discard the idea of using metal halide lighting, as it is outdated technology. Instead, there are significantly better alternatives available, such as LEDs and T5 options. It's important to select a light that is specifically designed for a reef aquarium. Manufacturers often advertise this suitability by providing PAR/Spectrum data and indicating the appropriate coverage area.

Different types of corals have varying light requirements. Soft corals and LPS corals, for instance, don't need as much light as SPS corals. Therefore, it's crucial to choose a light that can produce higher PAR values if you plan to predominantly keep SPS corals. As a first-time tank owner, you're likely aiming for a mixed reef with a variety of corals. Ensure that the light(s) effectively cover the dimensions of your tank. For instance, a 24" cube tank may only need a single LED fixture, while a 72" x 24" aquarium will require 3-4 LED fixtures or more. Consult the manufacturer's information regarding the coverage area to be certain.

Mounting the light over your tank is essential, and it's worth noting that some LEDs have limited mounting options. Consider your preferred method of mounting and choose a light that can accommodate those needs.
