When water rich in algae cells, bacteria, viruses, and plankton flows through the sealed UV irradiation chamber driven by a submersible pump, UVC photons directly penetrate the cell walls of these microorganisms. High-energy UVC disrupts the DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) and RNA (ribonucleic acid) structures within their nuclei. This photochemical damage immediately renders the microorganisms incapable of reproduction and can even cause direct cell death.
This entire process is purely physical. After thorough exposure to UV light, the water exiting the device is "disinfected," with algae spores rendered inactive. These deactivated algae cells are either captured by physical filter media within the filtration system or settle out, ultimately being removed during the next routine water change. The UV algae-removal lamp operates without adding any chemicals throughout its entire process, never inducing resistance. It is absolutely safe for fish, shrimp, aquatic plants, and nitrifying bacteria (which primarily adhere to filter media and do not pass through the device in large quantities with the water flow).
