Three primary types dominate the market: T5 fluorescent tubes, LEDs, and metal halide lamps. T5 fixtures provide uniform, soft light with natural color rendering, suitable for all coral types, but they consume significant power and generate substantial heat. LEDs are currently dominant, offering energy efficiency, long lifespan, programmable spectrum control, and sunrise/sunset simulation to maximize coral fluorescence. However, careful setup is needed to avoid localized over-illumination. Metal halide lamps deliver high light output and penetration with an attractive shimmering effect, but generate significant heat and have a fixed spectrum. Many aquarists combine LED and T5 lighting to balance effects and uniformity.
